iPod buying guide

So you're browsing the local gadget store, and you come to the iPod's you see four or five models displayed all with varying prices, which one is right for you? Tada! Our iPod buying guide will help you determine which model is ideal for you and your lifestyle. Yes it really is a lifestyle decision.

First off what are our options? Apple has four models out now (including a couple of items that are being marketed under the HP brand). The iPod photo, 4G (fourth generation), Shuffle, and mini. All bare the sheer coolness of the iPod, but each have very different features that may or may not be useful to you. Which is why we created this iPod buyers guide.

iPod Photo: The iPod photo is the top of the line on the market right now. With a color screen, storage and viewing capability for photos, and increased battery life it's worth every cent.. The screen in itself is worth the additional cost for this unit in my opinion; everything is more vibrant, your play lists, album art, solitaire etc (price tag varies approx. $349 for the 30 GB model).

iPod 4G (fourth generation): The next step below the photo, the 4G is the model that has been out since the beginning (of course it's been upgraded though). With the recent marketing of two models under the HP brand there are now two different storage capacities available. (20 GB and 40 GB). While this unit doesn't offer a color screen, it is larger then it's counter part the iPod mini. The 4G offers by far the most accessories available. From FM transmitters, to Voice recording devices for voice notes.

If you're looking for good storage capacity, but don't see and advantage to the color screen this unit will suit you fine. The 20GB will hold approximately 5000 songs, and the 40 GB from HP 10,000 songs approx. Selling prices are about $300 and $400 respectively.

iPod Mini: First entered the market to compete with other brands basic players (diamond, creative etc.) but since then it's taken on a whole new niche of it's own. People going to buy a mini rarely would walk out of the store with something else. The functionality of the mini is more or less identical to it's older brother the 4G less a smaller screen and no ability to store voice clips.

Now even without those features and a smaller storage capacity the iPod mini makes up for it with cool colors!! Green, pink, blue, pink and metallic. It's the most style conscious model available. Storage for the mini is 4 GB (approx 1000 songs) or 6 GB approx 1500 songs). Price tags are about $200 and $250 respectively.

Now last but not least the iPod Shuffle, this is the newest addition to the iPod family, and is a more sporty orientated model. Unless you have a small music collection this probably isn't the sole unit you'd want to own, but with a thin price point it can be an ideal second iPod to own.

The shuffle has no screen, just navigation buttons. It's slim so easy to run with, or work out at the gym. Battery life is well over 12 hours, and it's easy to upload and change your library. The shuffle has 512 MB (approx 120 songs) and 1 GB (approx 240 songs) capacities. They're about $100 and $150 respectively.
