iPod FM Transmitter

iPod FM Transmitter image

You're driving wishing there was a better way then having to switch CD's all the time to keep a good mix of music going in the car. Something more like your iPod? Well wish no more, the anwser is an iPod fm transmitter. Not farmiliar with this techno mumbo jumbo? No problemo, that's what this article is for.

The concept of an fm transmitter isn't new. CD changers for the trunk of your car have been using it for several years. The concept is simple. Set the device to broadcast on a particular pre-set FM band (one that isn't used by a radio station in your area), generally most players offer several to choose from. Set your FM radio to the FM station selected, and voila you have music playing from the device being broadcasted over the FM band you selected. An iPod FM transmitter is no different. It uses the exact sample principles to take the tunes from your iPod and broadcast them so that your car radio, or any FM radio within close range can pick them up. So the benefits are obvious right?

An FM transmitter allows you to of course play your iPod in the car without any fancy hook up required, but also at the cottage through your boombox, at a friends place, the office etc. Basically it's a quick no plugin solution to hearing you iPod tunes outside your headphones. So what are your options for a device like this?

Griffin iTrip FM transmitter
The Griffin iTrip is one of the first iPod FM transmitters. Nicest feature of this unit is that it needs no batteries, it gets the limited amout of power it needs to operate from the iPod itself. The iTrip works with most iPod models (unfortunately not the shuffle at this time). More detailed info on the iTrip here, or check out the Griffin iTrip below.

There have been some complaints that the FM transmitters don't supply the quality of sound expected from an iPod. You should keep in mind how a radio works, since it's not a wired system, there is bound to be sometimes when something interupts the signal, or you can't quite seem to get everything sync'd right; but that's a small price to pay for the ease of use that these accessories provide. If you drive a lot, or just want to enjoy your iPod tunes in the car check out one of the iPod fm tranmistters we've mentioned here you won't be sorry!
